AIR CONDITIONING IN DATA CENTERS ENERGY EFFICIENT AIR CONDITIONING IS GAINING INCREASE IN IMPORTANCE There are several reasons for the growing importance of energy-efficient air conditioning in data centers. Here, too, the fault tolerance and life support of critical infrastructures are becoming increasingly relevant and indispensable. Because today, our security and the life support functions of our infrastructure cannot be guaranteed without these things. And the demand for server power is growing. The world's population and technical developments are not stopping. Big data, the Internet of Things, 5G and autonomous driving require ever more computing power. In particular, the constant integration of artificial intelligence into new areas of our daily lives requires data storage in data centers. Thus, air conditioning requirements in data centers are a central topic for data center air conditioning. Accurate and efficient cooling of the server room is responsible for the safe storage of data. Server cooling costs amount to several billion euros per year and account for about a third of the total energy requirements in a data center. Energy efficiency is therefore one of the key objectives of data center air conditioning. The environmental aspect of energy-efficient cooling should not be neglected either. The greater the CO2 and greenhouse gas savings when cooling a data center, the better the impact on the ecological balance. By using indirect, adiabatic evaporative cooling instead of ozone-depleting refrigerants, our systems reduce climate-damaging CO2 emissions. In summary, reduced operating costs and better environmental balance when cooling a data center provide a decisive competitive advantage. EFFICIENT AIR CONDITIONING CONCEPTS FOR DATA CENTERS An efficient cooling and air conditioning concept for data centers is crucial to solving the problem of operating costs. When developing our cooling technology for server rooms, we attach particular importance to its efficiency. The energy efficiency of air conditioning systems is measured using the PUE value. This ratio shows the total energy consumption of the data center in relation to the energy consumption of the IT infrastructure. The optimal PUE value is 1.0. In fact, especially for existing installations, values up to 2.0 are the rule. This means that the same amount of energy is used to air-condition the data centers and other processes as it is to run the computers. With rising energy costs and servers running non-stop 365 days a year, this is not a good ratio. Air-conditioning in data centers often accounts for up to 60% of the total energy costs. For this reason, we are constantly working on highly efficient data center solutions and achieving PUE values up to 1.2. Our ventilation systems achieve these ideal efficiency levels through a combination of indirect free cooling and adiabatic evaporative cooling. In cases where the cooling demand exceeds this combination, compression cooling can be used. "Partial Power Usage Effectiveness" (pPUE) is also a very important key figure. This figure is used to determine which cooling system is suitable for a data center. The pPUE value represents the energy requirement for cooling and IT equipment relative to the energy requirement for the IT equipment. This creates a key figure for the cooling system. The lower the value, the less energy is required for cooling. Cost savings from adiabatic evaporative cooling systems can amount to several thousand euros per year, depending on the size of the data center. Since these sizes and other factors vary greatly, we focus on the payback period to describe the economic benefit. The payback period for the investment in our air conditioning technology is only 2-5 years. When developing an air conditioning concept for a data center, we analyze all general conditions and develop project-specific solutions. The planning department takes into account architectural features such as the distribution of server racks, the location of the server room in the building and the direction of air ducts. If the circulating air needs heating, then it is heated by means of a pump and a PWW thermal register valve built into the supply duct (PV). Dehumidification with outdoor air in winter In the ThermoCond 19 series, the dehumidification of the pool is carried out by adding fresh outdoor air to the circulating flow, whereby a part of the outdoor air is automatically and continuously adjusted depending on the current evaporation of water (filling the pool bowl), depending on the humidity of the outdoor air. If the heat recovery is not sufficient to reach the supply air temperature, the supply air is reheated via the PWW heating register. In the ThermoCond 29 series, most of the sensible and latent heat is removed from the exhaust air and transferred to the supply air by means of a heat exchanger section and a crossflow evaporator. If the capacity of the heat pump is insufficient, the supply air is reheated using the heat register PWW. Excess heat can also be transferred by means of a condenser (optional) to heat the pool water. Dehumidification with outdoor air in summer With an increase in the humidity of the exhaust air (RH), the recirculation damper (if necessary) takes the "Closed" position and operates with 100% of the volume of outside air (OA). The removal of exhaust air (S) is carried out through a cross-counterflow heat exchanger. Dehumidification of circulating air (ThermoCond 29) In ThermoCond 29, the air is initially dried in the heat pump evaporator, this process is enhanced by connecting a cross-counterflow heat exchanger upstream of the heat exchanger. Further, the air (cooled and dehumidified) is preheated in the heat exchanger when interacting with the exhaust air of the pool. In addition, heat exchange takes place on the other side of the heat exchanger, which pre-cools the exhaust air (HE), which in its properties is moist and warm. The exhaust air coming from the swimming pool is close to the dew point and therefore the preheated dehumidified air is partially mixed with the untreated circulating air, where it is heated in the heat pump condenser. During the dehumidification process, air is supplied and into the swimming pool along with supply air. Because the process becomes economical and the heat pump requires less energy for dehumidification. The optimal calculation is 0.25 kWh/kg. If necessary, the supply air is reheated by the PWW cylinder heat register. Heat pump operation at home (ThermoCond 29) The built-in heat pump in the system can significantly heat the air in an indoor pool with relatively low energy consumption. That is why its use is economically justified. Since the low supply temperature of the heat pump is not sufficient, it is necessary to use the PWW heating register to heat the indoor air of the swimming pool. Which is located behind the air condenser in a unit with an integrated heat pump. In this way, a home heat pump can operate with optimal COP at constant low supply temperatures. In combination, both systems work in tandem and heat the supply air to the desired temperature level.
